Bakti BCA Supports Cutting-Edge Innovation by Providing an Incubation Room for 15,000 Turtle Eggs

Banyuwangi, 28 July 2024 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) continues its commitment in environmental conservation efforts in Indonesia. Through the Bakti BCA program, the company supports research and production of “Intan Ruang” by Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation (BSTF). “Intan Ruang” is a room-scale artificial turtle egg incubation tool with volume 12 m3, which can significantly increase the chances of hatching turtle hatchlings.

Aside from not requiring sand medium, “Intan Ruang” has been recorded to have a high success rate of sea turtle egg hatching since it was first used in May 2024, with rates exceeding 90%. This percentage is higher compared to the average hatching success rate using the semi-natural nest relocation method that was previously managed by BSTF.

Another advantage of the “Intan Ruang” is its ability to manage temperature and humidity during the incubation process. As a result, this effort can manage the sex ratio of the turtle hatchlings. In terms of capacity, “Intan Ruang” can also accommodate up to 15.000 sea turtle eggs. This is significantly larger compared to the capacity of the “Intan Box” (an incubation medium with a box shape measuring 120x60x46 cm), previously supported by Bakti BCA, which could accommodate up to 1.000 sea turtle eggs.

Currently, “Intan Ruang” and “Intan Box” have received a statement letter from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights indicating that they are eligible for a Simple Patent and are in the final process of obtaining the Simple Patent Certificate. Previously, another invention from BSTF called “Sari Box”, which was also supported in its research and production by Bakti BCA, received a Simple Patent Certificate with Patent Number IDS000006489. The “Sari Box” is a therapeutic tool designed to accelerate the absorption of a large yolk into the body of a turtle hatchling, providing it with food reserves for four days before returning to the sea.

BSTF Supervisor Wiyanto Haditanojo stated, "Due to global warming, the majority of sea turtles hatching in the wild are currently female. In the wild, a female sea turtle requires between four to six male turtles to fertilize the eggs inside her during a single nesting season. With innovations such as Intan Box and Intan Room, we aim not only to improve the effectiveness of sea turtle egg hatching but also to better control the gender ratio of the turtles. We would like to thank Bakti BCA for their support in the Intan Box and Intan Room innovations. We also extend our gratitude to the University of Airlangga for their research assistance, and to the government through the Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKSDA) and the Balai Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Pesisir & Laut Padang (BPSPL) for their support in sea turtle conservation efforts in Banyuwangi. We hope that the collaboration between Bakti BCA and BSTF in sea turtle conservation will inspire other parties in Indonesia," said Wiyanto.

EVP Corporate Communication and Social Responsibility BCA Hera F. Haryn expressed, 'Bakti BCA is honored to be part of supporting the research and development of Intan Ruang by the BSTF team. We believe that the presence of Intan Ruang can be a crucial factor in the success of sea turtle conservation in Banyuwangi and Indonesia. Through the Bakti Lingkungan pillar, we are committed to continuously supporting the government in all efforts to conserve sea turtles, thereby contributing to the creation of a healthy marine ecosystem, which in turn can bring economic benefits to the local communities.

The maritime region of Indonesia is home to six species of sea turtles out of the seven that exist worldwide. All seven species of sea turtles are listed on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list and in Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This situation has motivated Bakti BCA to participate in efforts to conserve these animals.

Bakti BCA's support for BSTF did not start just one or two years ago. In addition to supporting the research and creation of Intan Box and Intan Ruang, Bakti BCA has contributed to the release of more than 24,000 turtle hatchlings, relocated over 400 turtle nests, and planted 300 pandanus trees as coastal vegetation. All of this support was carried out between 2016 and 2023.

Bakti BCA also conducted education on the importance of sea turtles to the community, in collaboration with the government and several other parties. On this occasion, BCA and BSTF invited 100 students from two elementary schools in Banyuwangi to receive education on sea turtle conservation. The event, held at So Long Beach, Banyuwangi, concluded with the release of over 1,600 turtle hatchlings.
