Maluku, 5 March 2024 – PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) once again held a Cataract Surgery Social Service and currently the program's reach has expanded to Namrole, South Buru, Maluku. The activity that was conducted under Bakti BCA program, took place on March 1-2, 2024, with 62 patients from Namrole and participants from surrounding areas.
The cataract surgery social initiative in Namrole was conducted by BCA in collaboration with the Cataract Blindness Management Division of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK PERDAMI). The program was held at the Regional Public Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Salim Alkatiri Namrole, South Buru, Maluku.
The opening ceremony of the free cataract surgery activity from Bakti BCA was also attended by Deputy Chairman of the South Buru DPRD La Hamidi, Regional Secretary of South Buru Ruslan Makatita, Head of the South Buru Health Office Wa Jeny, South Buru Police Chief AKBP M. Agung Gumilar, Director of RSUD dr. Salim Alkatiri Namrole Hanafi Laitupa, and a representative of Danramil II Leksula, SPBK Perdami, and BCA Regional Office (Kanwil) IV. This activity reflects the company’s commitment to reducing blindness due to cataracts in Indonesia.
BCA EVP of Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility Hera F. Haryn said, “As a part of the Bakti Kesehatan program, cataract surgery social services will continue to be conducted by BCA to improve the life quality of people in need. We realize that eye health is essential and needs to be maintained so that one can maximize their productivity. Therefore, in collaboration with SPBK PERDAMI, we conduct free cataract strategies as a form of support for the community to remain productive and fulfill their role in the community.”
Namrole is a small town in the southern part of Buru Island, Maluku. The sub-district is the capital of South Buru Regency and most of the population work as farmers, fishermen, and traders. The city is located in the lowlands, and the northern area is covered by mountains. The enforcement of free cataract surgery in Namrole is expected to ease the burden on the local community, especially for those suffering from the disease.
All patients who received free cataract surgery met the medical criteria of the SPBK PERDAMI team and Dr. Salim Alkatiri Namrole Hospital. BCA has routinely organized free cataract surgeries with SPBK PERDAMI since 2001. By the end of 2023, in total 7,694 patients had received free cataract surgeries from BCA’s activities with SPBK PERDAMI.
In 2023, BCA’s cataract surgery program was held in several locations and attended by 1,036 patients, including:
- Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, Jakarta
- RSUD Puruk Cahu, Central Kalimantan
- Awal Bros Hospital Batam, Riau Islands
- Karel Sadsuitubun Hospital, Kei Kecil, Southeast Maluku
- Unggul Karsa Medika Hospital, Bandung
- KH Muhammad Thohir Hospital, Krui, Lampung
- RSUD Manokwari, West Papua, and
- Umbu Rara Meha Hospital, Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara
BCA has also collaborated with the Kick Andy Foundation since 2017 and has performed cataract surgery on 437 patients. Going forward, BCA is committed to continuing and expanding the cataract surgery social service program across Indonesia.
RSUD dr. Salim Alkatiri Namrole Director Hanafi Laitupa said, “We greatly appreciate the efforts given by BCA in carrying out the cataract surgery social program to various regions, especially to Namrole. Cataract is an urgent eye disease in Indonesia, and BCA’s cataract surgery social service program is very beneficial for the community. We hope BCA can continue to carry out similar activities in more regions in Indonesia, to reduce the number of cataract cases nationwide.”
In addition to performing cataract surgeries, BCA also proactively supports the program by providing cataract surgery equipment to support SPBK PERDAMI and its branches. Through strong collaboration with SPBK PERDAMI, the cataract surgery social service program is expected to run more effectively by utilizing technology, to reduce potential risks and the impact can be more positive.
