Bandung, 22 October 2023 - While holding his wife’s arm, 48-year-old Kiman walked slowly into one of the rooms at Unggul Karsa Medika Hospital in Bandung on Sunday (22/10). It has been two years since Kiman’s eyes lost their normal vision. The well-built young man was diagnosed with cataracts, which compelled him to cease working. To meet his daily needs and care for his two young children, Kiman's wife operates a small business.
Before, Kiman was employed in a welding workshop where he earned a decent income. Unfortunately, the welding mask and glasses he used were unable to shield his eyes from the intense glare of the welding flames. This resulted in discomfort and a gradual loss of his vision. It was at this point that Kiman, a resident of Sukamenak, learned about a free cataract surgery program being offered at a hospital near his village.
To commemorate World Sight Day, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) is organizing a series of Cataract Surgery Social Service Program as part of its CSR initiative. In collaboration with the Cataract Blindness Management Division of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK PERDAMI), Bakti BCA held a cataract surgery program at Unggul Karsa Medika Hospital on Sunday (22/10).
Around 150 patients from Bandung and its neighboring areas, who met the medical criteria set by the PERDAMI ophthalmologist team, participated in the event. The cataract surgery in Bandung is a part of Bakti BCA’s Cataract Surgery Social Service programs, which also cover Southeast Maluku, West Pesisir Lampung, and Manokwari.
Head of BCA Sub-branch Office in Soekarno Hatta Linda Yulia Tanti explained, “We selected Bandung as one of the locations for Cataract Surgery Social Service due to the community’s demand for cataract surgery. We recognize the significance of eye health, and our aim is to perform these cataract surgeries to help the community regain productivity and actively participate in their roles within the community.”
BCA has consistently organized cataract surgeries since 2001. By 2022, BCA had sponsored 803 cataract surgeries at various locations in Indonesia and provided medical services to over 15,000 patients through clinics affiliated with BCA. Looking ahead, BCA is dedicated to both continuing and expanding the Cataract Surgery Social Service program nationwide.
BCA EVP of Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility Hera F. Haryn stated, “We recognize that cataracts are an eye condition that can affect people’s performance. Although surgery is a potential solution, not everyone has access to quality healthcare facilities. We hope that Bakti BCA cataract surgery social service program can extend its reach to a broader area of Indonesia, including remote regions, to assist in reducing the number of cataract cases.”
Besides offering cataract surgeries, BCA takes proactive steps to support cataract eradication efforts by providing cataract surgery equipment to aid SPBK PERDAMI and its branch offices. Collaborating with SPBK PERDAMI, the Cataract Surgery Social Service program is poised to persist in its mission of reducing the number of cataract patients in Indonesia.
SPBK PERDAMI representative dr. Faraby Martha expressed, “We highly appreciate BCA’s ongoing efforts to expand the cataract surgery social service program to various regions, reaching cataract patients across Indonesia. The support in providing cataract surgery equipment has also significantly contributed to the eradication of cataract blindness in Indonesia. I hope that through our expanding collaboration, we can further decrease the number of cataract patients in Indonesia.”
Meanwhile, after undergoing cataract surgery, Kiman appeared enthusiastic as he listened to the doctor’s explanations about post-operative care, including the importance of not hastily removing the eye patch. “I am very grateful to be able to participate in the free cataract surgery. I hope I can see again and return to work at the workshop. Hatur nuhun, BCA,” Kiman concluded.
