Jakarta, 25 February 2024 – Waste management and recycling are inseparable parts of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) operations. During 2023, BCA successfully collected 12.2 tons of waste from outdated uniforms to be recycled. In conducting the recycling process, BCA collaborates with local artisan weavers while promoting women’s empowerment and workers with disabilities.
BCA President Director Jahja Setiaatmadja stated, “The recycling of uniform waste is proof of our determination to conduct environmentally friendly banking operations. By implementing a circular economy, we hope to have a positive impact not only on the bank’s operations but also on the society and environment.”
About half of the uniform wastes collected have been processed to produce 36,000 meters of recycled fabric. Besides utilizing uniform waste, recycled fabric production has also succeeded in saving 105 million liters of water usage compared to water usage during conventional fabric production.
BCA SVP of Environment Sustainability Governance Linda Chandrawati explained that uniform recycling is just one of BCA’s many initiatives in contributing to a circular economy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Indonesia. Aside from uniform recycling, BCA also manages other operational waste, such as outdated archives and calendars, EDC machines, UPS, hard disc servers, BCA token keys, debit cards and credit cards, to plastic money wrap. The total management and recycling of waste conducted by BCA during 2023 reached 589 tons.
“We always prioritize environmental, social, and government (ESG) values from all the company’s banking operations. Through those initiatives, BCA could potentially reduce carbon emissions by around 3,000 tons of CO2 derived from operational waste management, digitalization of banking solutions and processes, to implementing environmentally friendly buildings and environmental preservation,” said Linda.
BCA EVP of Corporate Communication and Social Responsibility Hera F. Haryn mentioned that the company will continue to pursue initiatives that benefit the environment and the local community through a circular economy. “We hope the production of new recycled uniforms will not be the last initiative from BCA. We believe the circular economy can overcome the environmental challenges as well as being the solution to boost the local community’s economy,” Hera concluded.
For information, the initiative to process 12.2 tons of uniform waste is part of BCA’s 67th Anniversary series. The results of the uniform waste processing have been distributed to BCA employees (Insan BCA), which are worn as new uniforms to celebrate BCA’s 67th Anniversary.
