Tasikmalaya, 28 November 2023 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) collaborated with the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs to organize a free halal certification workshop for MSMEs assisted by BCA in Tasikmalaya. This initiative reflects BCA's ongoing commitment to contribute to the empowerment of MSMEs through Indonesia's halal economy. The training took place at Horison Hotel, Tasikmalaya and was attended by 50 MSMEs and Head of BCA Sub-branch Office in Tasikmalaya Hendri Darmin on Tuesday (28/11).
Head of BCA Sub-branch Office in Tasikmalaya Hendri Darmin explained, “We are dedicated to consistently contributing to the empowerment of MSMEs in Indonesia. One of our initiatives in line with this commitment is to organize a free halal certification workshop. The aim of this program is to assist MSMEs, especially those in Tasikmalaya, in enhancing product quality and fostering an increase in their sales turnover.”
Over the years, BCA has consistently organized training activities for MSMEs to obtain halal certification. This year, BCA continues this commitment by providing similar assistance to MSMEs in DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, South Sulawesi, and other provinces with a demand for halal products. In collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, BCA aims to accelerate the halal certification of 1,000 MSMEs in Indonesia by the end of 2023.
BCA not only provides a facility for issuing halal certificates but also facilitates the issuance of Business Identification Numbers (NIB) for MSMEs participating in the event. The process of obtaining NIB for MSMEs is conducted online with assistance from the Garda Transfumi Team before the training session. This initiative is aimed at encouraging MSME players to possess comprehensive legal documentation, thereby enabling them to access more opportunities for business development.
MSMEs that can participate in this free certification training are divided into two groups, namely debtor/customer criteria and business/product criteria. Those who fall into the first criteria are MSMEs in the micro segment with a business capital of less than IDR 2 billion, have their own/original products, and have a Business License Number (NIB). Meanwhile, the business/product criteria are MSMEs engaged in food/beverages, home industries, have a maximum product variant of 10 types, and have never applied for/have a halal certificate.
Empowering MSMEs has consistently been a fundamental aspect of BCA's journey. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, business owners experienced an average turnover increase of 8.5% after obtaining a halal certificate for their businesses.
BCA’s support for MSMEs is also evident in the financing sector, reflected in the disbursement of MSME loans that grew by 16.4% YoY to reach IDR 104.8 trillion as of September 2023. BCA’s commitment to supporting MSMEs to become champions in the homeland is also reflected in the organization of BCA UMKM Fest 2023, held offline at Gandaria City, Jakarta, from 9-13 August, and online from 12 August to 13 September 2023, successfully reaching 1,400 MSME participants.
BCA EVP of Corporate Communication & Responsibility Hera F. Haryn stated, “We sincerely hope that the introduction of this halal certification facility will bring about a positive impact on the quality of products from MSMEs. Given that Indonesia is home to the world's largest Muslim population, obtaining halal certification is an essential requirement for business products in the country. With this support, we aspire to see an increase in MSMEs opting for halal certification, thereby encouraging them to enhance the overall quality of their products.”
In fact, the Indonesian Ministry of Finance has indicated that the halal economy has the potential to boost Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by USD 5.1 billion annually through exports and investments, given the sizable population of 230 million Muslims in the country. The global halal economy is projected to reach USD 4.96 trillion by the year 2030.
