Optimizing Public Health, BCA Donated Rp1.315B Worth of Equipments for Cataract Surgery and Blood Donation

Jakarta, 24 September 2018 – Through the Bakti BCA program, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) reestablishes its commitment and social responsibility in providing valued added to the community. BCA realizes them by submitting Equipment Donation for Cataract Surgery to SPBK Perdami Central Board and DKI Jakarta Branch Office as well as Equipment Donation for Blood Donation to UTD PMI DKI Jakarta.

Director of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) Suwignyo Budiman together with Executive Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of BCA Inge Setiawati symbolically submitted 2 microscopes to Dr. Umar Mardianto, SpM (K) Chairman of SPBK Perdami Central Board, 1 microscrope to dr. Rio Rhendy, SpM Chairman of SPBK Perdami DKI Jakarta Branch Office as well as 4 sets of Blood Scale & Mixer to Muhammad Ali Reza Chairman of DKI Jakarta PMI Provincial Board totaling of Rp1.315 B at Break Out Area, Menara BCA, Monday (24/09). The donation was given to support the improvement of the quality of health services in Indonesia.

Based on data from World Health Organization (WHO), in Indonesia, there are about 3.5 million people suffering from blindness, with 50% or around 1.5 million blind people are caused by cataracts. Based on the records of Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI), as of 30 August 2018, cataract is the leading cause of blindness in Indonesia, which reaches almost 60 per cent. In addition to that, BCA also continues to support medical activities run by PMI. Based on the records of World Health Organization (WHO) on the Ministry of Health website, in July 2017, the minimum amount of blood requirements in Indonesia is around 5.1 million blood bags per year or 2% of Indonesia population.

“This is what makes us realize that cataract blindness and blood requirements in Indonesia remains major health issues faced by the public. For this reason, various initiatives are required of various parties, including from private sector. As the bank of the people, BCA wishes to give more attention to improving the quality of public health, not only through the implementation of free cataract surgery and blood donor activities. Therefore, this support is a testament to our efforts to ensure a better collective welfare,” said Suwignyo.   

Suwignyo added that until semester II 2018, together with SPBK, BCA had performed 32 cataract surgeries in various regions in Indonesia with almost 3,000 operations. Whereas, with PMI, BCA managed to collect more than 47 thousand blood bags from 103 blood donor activities. In addition, BCA had also donated one unit of Phacoemulsification Cataract Machine Intuitiv AMO and three sets of cataract surgery support equipment worth Rp659.5 million in 2017 and donated 1unit of operational vehicle to PMI worth Rp450,000,000. In 2016, BCA had also donated two microscopes worth Rp500 million, 13 operating aids and 2 biometric tools worth Rp450.45 million in 2015, and 1 microscope worth Rp385 million in 2014.

“Therefore, we would like to invite everyone to help those in need. We also hope that BCA supports will provide positive impacts on sustainable public health,” Suwignyo concluded.
