The Importance of Data Confidentiality That You Should Know

On various occasions, personal data contains sensitive data. Usually, it covers information, such as full name, date of birth, phone number, and other personal information. In banking, personal data is used as an identity to authorize access to customer banking accounts. Examples, such as ATM card numbers, PINs, OTP, CVV/CVC, and many more. This personal data must remain confidential as it is used as a verification key to access or make transactions. Therefore, you must not disclose to anyone to ensure that it is the rightful owner who makes transactions, not a fraud.

Personal data is particularly vulnerable to theft by hacker or fraudster and has serious implications if misused. Identity theft can happen in many ways, including giving fake web addresses or sending malicious files to victims to steal the victim’s financial data.

If your data is compromised, it can lead to illegal activities such as accessing the victim’s bank account and emptying it. That’s why people are encouraged to implement security measures at all times, such as changing passwords regularly. Further, you can also take the following steps to protect your banking data.

1. Never give out personal information

You must exercise caution when providing personal data, whether online, over the phone, or in person. When asked to fill out personal information through a link on a given website, make sure it is the official website of the agency or company. Never let yourself fall victim to fraudster traps trying to steal your data.

2. Verify the credibility of the person requesting the data

It is vital to verify the credibility of an agency or company that requests data from you. It keeps you from irresponsible parties such as fraudsters. Be alert, observant, and not negligent even when promised lucrative gains.

3. Create a strong password that is hard to guess

Creating a password or PIN for mobile banking applications should never use personal information, such as name, date of birth, phone number, etc. When possible, create login information (such as a unique username and password) where they cannot easily be guessed. Any combination of letters, numbers, and symbols will produce a safer and stronger password.

4. Do not download or click links randomly

To avoid phishing, do not enter confidential data, such as passwords, OTP, etc., through unknown web pages. If you get a link or document from social media, do not download the file impulsively, especially if it is from an unknown source. It could be a trap to steal your information to take over your banking account.

5. Activate two-factor authentication

In addition to using a combination of passwords and PINs to access mobile banking applications, you can also use strong passwords for your smartphone. Use fingerprint or face ID as additional protection if necessary. Prepare anticipatory steps in case you lose your phone, because all of your important data are stored in it.

In securing data, not only customers are responsible but also service providers. BCA is paying attention to this matter so that it can be of concern to all customers. Further, BCA also continues to try to detect suspicious activities from customers to protect them from scams.

Personal data is valuable and prone to misuse. As technology advances, more dangerous crimes develop. For this reason, beware of fraud modes that try to breach your data to commit crimes. If you receive a suspicious contact on behalf of BCA, call our Call Centre immediately via HaloBCA application or via 1500888.
