One of the obligations of Muslims is paying zakat. Now, it’s easier than ever with BCA, as zakat payments can be made through myBCA or BCA mobile. Among the various types of zakat, three are obligatory for almost all Muslims, such as zakat fitrah, zakat maal, and zakat income.
Below is an explanation of each type of zakat and how to pay it through BCA.
The 3 Most Common Types of Zakat Paid
The following are the three most common types of zakat that Muslims often pay:
1. Zakat Fitrah
Also called zakat badan or zakat jiwa, this is a zakat that all Muslims are obliged to pay as long as they are alive and experience the month of Ramadan.
Thus, zakat fitrah must be paid anytime from the beginning of Ramadan until Eid al-Fitr, at the latest before the Eid al-Fitr prayer on the 1st of Shawwal.
2. Zakat Maal
This zakat must be paid by owners of certain types of property, as regulated in Islam, including:
- Gold, silver, and other precious metals
- Money and other securities
- Trade
- Agriculture, plantations, and forestry
- Livestock and fisheries
- Mining
- Industry
- Income and services
- Rikaz (treasure trove)
Zakat maal can be paid at any time throughout the year. The amount required is 2.5% of the total property value after reaching the predetermined nisab and having been owned for one (1) year.
3. Zakat Income
As the name suggests, this is zakat paid from income or earnings derived from work performed routinely in a specific field of expertise, provided that it is lawful or at least permitted by sharia law.
Income zakat, also known as professional zakat, must be paid if the income reaches or exceeds the nisab. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has determined the nisab for this zakat as 85 grams of gold, with a rate of 2.5% per year.
